Scott Turner, a former NFL player, has been picked by President-elect Donald Trump to lead HUD. The announcement came Friday. Turner will oversee housing laws, mortgage programs, and rental aid if the Senate confirms him.
Turner chairs the Center for Education Opportunity at the America First Policy Institute. He has worked closely with Trump’s team on policy goals. During Trump’s first term, Turner led the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council. The council boosted investments in low-income areas called “opportunity zones.” These zones were created under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Turner worked with former HUD Secretary Ben Carson to promote the program.
Trump praised Turner’s efforts in transforming struggling communities. He noted Turner’s leadership across 16 federal agencies. Together, they implemented over 200 policies for economic growth.
Turner grew up in Texas and played nine seasons in the NFL. He suited up for the Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins), San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos. After retiring, Turner ran for Congress in 2006 but lost. He later served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2012 to 2017.
Turner’s mix of sports, politics, and community work makes him a unique pick. He’s set to lead HUD during a key phase of Trump’s second term.
