Lionel Messi and Inter Miami Eliminated in MLS Playoff Shocker

Inter Miami’s playoff run in the MLS came to a surprising end Saturday night, as they lost 3-2 to Atlanta United in a tense Game 3. Even with Lionel Messi scoring an exciting second-half equalizer, Atlanta pulled ahead with a late goal, sending Miami home earlier than anyone expected.

Lionel Messi’s Magic Not Enough

Messi seemed to save Miami’s hopes with a powerful header to tie the game, but Atlanta’s Bartosz Slisz responded in the 76th minute with his own header to seal the win. Miami’s defender, Tomás Avilés, was down on the field when the goal was scored, and Miami’s players were frustrated that the game wasn’t stopped for his injury. To add to the drama, Messi had two chances from free kicks to tie it up again, but Atlanta’s defense blocked both.

Biggest Playoff Upset?

Miami entered the playoffs as the top seed, with an incredible season that broke records. Atlanta, on the other hand, barely made it in, grabbing a wild-card spot at the last minute. Miami took the first game in the series, but Atlanta fought back in Game 2, setting up this do-or-die Game 3.

Miami had some tough calls in this game. They thought they’d scored again in the first half, but it was called offside. Later, they argued for a penalty after what looked like a handball, but the ref didn’t give it. Miami’s coach, Tata Martino, wasn’t happy with the calls, saying they were “decisive” and could have changed the game.

Looking to Next Season

This loss means Miami has yet to make it past the first round in the playoffs. With Messi, Suárez, and other big stars on the roster, they had high hopes this season. Despite the disappointment, Martino said he feels the club has made progress and that the team will aim higher next year.

Miami now shifts focus to building a strong roster for the 2025 season. Talks are ongoing to extend Suárez’s contract, while Messi is confirmed to stay in Miami for another season. Fans will be hoping for even more success next year as the club looks to learn from this season’s highs and lows.
