Australian breakdancer Raygun, or Rachael Gunn as she’s known off the dance floor, has decided she’s done with competitive dancing after a tough experience at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Raygun went viral during the Games not just for her unique moves but also for the wave of backlash she received. Her score? A big fat zero. And the internet wasn’t kind about it.
Raygun Bows Out of Competitive Breakdancing
In a recent chat on Australia’s 2DayFM, she opened up about her decision to step back. “I’m not going to compete anymore,” she said. “I was planning to keep going, but now… it just feels impossible to get out there in a battle.” She still dances—just now it’s in her living room with her partner instead of on the world stage. “The whole thing has been really upsetting. I just couldn’t control how people saw me or who I am,” she admitted.
A Love for Dance, Not for the Spotlight
But even with all the criticism, Raygun still believes in the joy of dance. “Dancing is just so fun, and it makes you feel good! Nobody should feel like crap about the way they dance. If you’re having fun on the dance floor, just go with it and own it,” she said.
Back in August, she even had to deal with rumors that she somehow rigged her spot on the Australian Olympic team, which she quickly shut down on Instagram. “I worked my butt off for the Olympics, and I gave it everything,” she wrote. The Australian breaking organization AUSBreak also backed her, calling out the false claims.
When asked if she’d ever consider coming out of retirement if breaking stays in the 2028 Olympics, Raygun didn’t hesitate: “No,” she laughed, “Nooooo!” It looks like the Olympics were her last big hurrah, but she’s still dancing—just in a way that feels right for her.
