Disney’s Moana 2 made a massive splash this Thanksgiving. The animated sequel earned $221 million in the US and Canada over five days. It smashed the record held by Frozen 2 since 2019.
A Beloved Heroine Returns
The film continues the story of Moana, the island girl who saves her people. Fans loved the adventure and emotional moments. Despite mixed reviews, audiences gave it an 87% approval rating.
Mixed Reviews, Strong Audience Love
Critics were less impressed, citing a weaker story. The film scored 65% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, families and kids flocked to theaters, proving its appeal.
Moana 2 was first planned as a Disney+ series. The original Moana has been a streaming hit since 2019. Its catchy songs and empowering lead character captured hearts during the pandemic.
A Diverse Audience Leads the Charge
Disney praised the film’s wide appeal. Two-thirds of the audience were women. Hispanic viewers made up 25%, Black 19%, and Asian 12%. Families across all backgrounds showed strong support.
Disney left no stone unturned in promoting Moana 2. There were character appearances at theme parks. Merchandise flooded stores. The premiere in Hawaii added a special touch.
Record-Breaking Thanksgiving Day
On Thanksgiving alone, the film earned $28 million. It set a new holiday record. This was almost double what Frozen 2 achieved in 2019.
2024 has been a triumph for Disney. Moana 2 joins Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine as billion-dollar hits.
What’s Next for Movie Fans?
The holiday movie season isn’t over. Upcoming releases include The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (Dec. 13). Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrive on Dec. 20.
For now, Moana 2 reigns supreme as Disney’s latest blockbuster success.
