In an emotional moment that stunned fans, music legend Elton John revealed he’s lost his eyesight due to complications from a severe infection. Speaking at the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical at London’s Dominion Theatre on December 1, Elton shared the news in a way only he could—honest, heartfelt, and with a touch of his trademark humor.
“I Can’t See, But I Can Hear, and Boy, It Sounded Good!”
Elton took the stage to address the star-studded crowd, which included Anna Wintour, Lily Collins, and Elizabeth Hurley. “As some of you may know, I’ve had some issues, and now I’ve lost my sight,” he said. “I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I’ve enjoyed it. And, boy, it sounded good tonight!”
The crowd was visibly moved as Elton continued to thank his husband, David Furnish, who has been by his side through it all. “To my husband, who’s been my rock—thank you. I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews, but I’ve loved hearing them, even if I can’t see them.”
A Long Road
This isn’t the first time Elton has spoken about his struggles with vision. Back in September, he shared on Instagram that a severe infection over the summer had left him with limited sight in one eye. At the time, he was optimistic about recovery, but things took a turn by November.
“I can’t see much of anything now. I can’t read, I can’t watch anything. It’s been tough,” Elton admitted in a recent interview. “Going into the studio and recording feels impossible right now, but I’m hopeful things might turn around.”
Still Standing
Even in the face of this devastating loss, Elton’s resilience shines through. While he may not be able to see the world around him, his gratitude and love for life remain intact. “I’m listening to the world in new ways, and that’s something,” he said.
Fans everywhere are rallying behind him, sending messages of love and encouragement to remind him that no matter what, his light and legacy will never fade. And if there’s one thing we know about Elton John, it’s that he’ll find a way to keep the music alive.
