Cher has released the first part of her memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part One. It focuses on her early life and her marriage to Sonny Bono. The 78-year-old star opens up about her struggles during their marriage, calling it “loveless.” She said she often felt trapped and even thought about ending her life in the 1970s.

Key Moments From Cher’s Memoir

Cher wrote that Bono stopped caring about her, which led her to have an affair with her guitarist, Bill Hamm. When Bono found out, he told her he had thought about throwing her off their balcony. Cher doesn’t believe he would have done it, but it shows how tense their relationship had become.

Cher turned to actress Lucille Ball for advice. Ball had also been married to a co-star, Desi Arnaz. Ball told Cher, “F*** him, you’re the one with talent.” This advice gave Cher strength to leave. Later, Cher gave similar advice to Tina Turner when she was dealing with her abusive husband, Ike Turner.

Cher also described a confrontation with producer Phil Spector. She said he released one of her demos without asking her. When she called him out, he waved a gun to scare her.

Family and Career

Cher talked about her son, Chaz Bono, in the book. She used the name “Chas” because that was what he went by at the time. She said Chaz gave her permission to write about him.

The memoir doesn’t cover the second half of Cher’s life. It ends before some of her biggest moments, like winning an Oscar for Moonstruck or a Grammy for Believe. Cher said writing the book was exhausting and hasn’t started the second part yet.

Her Marriage to Bono

Cher and Bono were married from 1964 to 1975. They became famous for their music and The Sonny & Cher Show. She said their relationship became worse over time. She once discovered that Bono owned 95% of their business, Cher Enterprises, while she owned nothing.

Despite their troubles, Cher said they stayed friends after their divorce. Bono later became a congressman. He died in a skiing accident in 1998.

What’s Next

The first part of Cher’s story shows her strength and struggles. It’s a story of survival, success, and finding her own voice. Fans are already waiting for Part Two.
