On the November 27 episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, the reality star sat down with her 21-year-old son, Robert Jr., to address a battle she never anticipated—his struggle with substance abuse.
In an emotionally raw scene rarely seen on reality TV, Mary Cosby encouraged her son to speak openly about his behavior, which had raised concerns.
A Painful Revelation
Entering his room, Mary asked her son for honesty, urging, “You’ve got to be real with me. Talk to me.” What followed was a string of revelations that left her reeling. Robert Jr. admitted to using Xanax to cope, describing how it started at 16 with a single pill at a party.
“I liked how it made me feel,” he explained. “From there, I started mixing it—Xanax with acid, Molly, cocaine, even OxyContin. I reached a point where I was taking ten 30-milligram Oxys at once, and I couldn’t feel anything.”
His description of his addiction was harrowing. “Sometimes, life feels like unseasoned chicken. But when I’m high, it’s like adding seasoning,” he said.
A Mother’s Despair
Mary’s heartbreak was evident as tears streamed down her face. “Do you see this as a problem? Are you unhappy?” she asked. Her son’s response shook her to the core: “I wanted to die. I felt like a stain, like this world wasn’t for me. You’re the only reason I didn’t.”
Through her sobs, Mary reassured him of her love. “You’re my gift from God. You’ve brought me more joy than anything in this world. But I can’t support this. You have to help yourself. Do you understand how much it would destroy me if I lost you?”
A Glimmer of Hope
While the conversation was raw and emotional, it also offered hope. Robert Jr. admitted he was beginning to find happiness again, and Mary pleaded with him to recognize his problem and commit to change.
In a recent update, Mary shared that her son is on a better path. “He’s doing lovely, beautiful,” she revealed in September. “I couldn’t be happier.”
